Renee Fleming grew up in coastal Maine, where the fog and the silence of the Atlantic shaped her earliest sense of story. She studied literature at Bowdoin College and later completed an MFA at the Iowa Writers' Workshop, where she began the manuscript that would become The Glass Inheritance.

Her novels are known for their atmospheric precision — the way a room can hold grief, the way a landscape can become a character. She is drawn to the spaces between what is said and what is meant, to the archaeology of family, and to the particular loneliness of women who know too much.

She lives between Portland, Maine and Edinburgh, Scotland, where she is at work on her fourth novel.
